The Flaming Chalice: The Symbol of Unitarian Universalist Faith
The symbol of Unitarian Universalism and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is a flame within a chalice (a cup with a stem and foot). There are many interpretations of the conjunction of these two archetypal images in the UU symbol. For the creator of its original design, Hans Deutsch, the flaming chalice symbolized helpfulness and service. The design of the current official UUA logo is intended to offer a visual representation of a modern and dynamic faith. Many UU congregations, including UUFD, create their own flaming chalice design as a symbol of their unique UU community.
