UUCD Choir Practice

From Elisa Woordruff, our Music Director:

The UUCD Music Program is built on principles of inclusion, strengths-building, and mutual encouragement. There are no auditions for participation in our musical programming, and people with all abilities, skills, and backgrounds are welcome.

Thank you all for your patience and support these last few weeks as I have faced some new health challenges. I very much appreciate everyone being so flexible with the cancellation of our Music Picnic and related performance and to Toni for jumping in to play piano last week. Thank you also to all of you who provided special music this summer. I know the congregation has really appreciated the return to live music in our services.

I hope you will all be able to join us at our first choir rehearsal this Sunday 8/27 at 8:45am in the sanctuary. Please arrive on time and ready to sing right away, so the tech crew and worship associates have adequate time and space to perform their pre-service duties before 10am. We will rehearse "Draw the Circle Wide" which we will perform at our In Gathering Service on 9/10. I know that many of you could sing this piece in your sleep, but it is vital that as many of you as possible can attend, so we can support any new people who come. To that end, please invite new people!! We have a great group, but I know there are sections -- especially the basses/baritones (aka Ed) who could use a little extra help!! During our rehearsal, we will make sure everyone is comfortable with their notes; work on diction, cut-offs, and dynamics that will make it sound really polished; and also talk about adding some percussion. We will also spend time learning our 10/15 anthem -- a really rhythmic/hypnotic setting of a passage "United in Purpose" from Rainbow in the Cloud by Maya Angelou. The composer of this piece Rollo Dilworth is a musician who I had the opportunity to work with when I was a kid, and he was a grad student, and it has been so exciting seeing his body of work grow -- one of the most published Black choral composers/arrangers of this era. :)

Other important music announcements:
  • Mark your calendars for Sunday 10/1 when UUCD will be hosting Special Guest Performers Gerry and Denise Dignan. They will be presenting a full service of music -- a program called "The Mystical Path in Song". Gerry and Denise have travelled the world performing uplifting, spiritual music drawn from many traditions -- including being guests at the UN!! Gerry is also one of the founders of Music Together -- a national program that brings music/movement education to children ages 0 to 8 years old -- and he was the music/movement coordinator at Jean Houston's Mystery School. We are so excited to have them perform for us!!
Anyway, I hope you all had a restful and restorative summer. I am thrilled to serve you a second year as Director of Music and very much look forward to seeing (and hearing!) you this Sunday.
