Hiroshima & Nagasaki Commemorative Ceremony

DeKalb Interfaith Network for Peace & Justice To Hold Commemorative Ceremony

The DeKalb Interfaith Network for Peace & Justice and Rockford Peace and Justice Action Committee invite the public
to join them in a brief ceremony to commemorate the many thousands of victims of the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima on
Aug. 6, 1945, followed by the bombing of Nagasaki 3 days later. Said at the time to be necessary to end World War II,
the bombs nevertheless caused incredible suffering of innocent victims in both cities and was responsible for ushering in
the Nuclear Age which threatens all life on the planet to this day.

As in the past, participants will toss flower petals into the Kish in memory of the victims, with Glidden's Florist again
providing the flowers. There will be poetry readings by prizewinning author Dr. John Bradley, First Congregational
Church pastor Dr. Joe Gastiger, and poet Ric Amesquita. Retired teacher Dan Kenney will say a few words about the
importance of remembering the bombing of the two cities. The ceremony will close with a song for peace by Dr. Howard
Solomon and a prayer for peace by Rev. Dr. Jane Ann Moore.

The brief ceremony will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6 on the College Avenue bridge over the Kishwaukee
River, close to the Art Building and the Lagoon.
